The Erriff Fishery
The Erriff Fishery offers visitors, locals and guests of Aasleagh Lodge exclusive fishing on a system comprising of the River Erriff and the 2 nearby loughs of Derrintin and Tawnyard. These waters are flourishing with Salmon, Brown Trout and Sea Trout.
SALMON FISHING IN IRELAND - THE RIVER ERRIFF
The River Erriff, a spate river, is one of Ireland's premier salmon fishing rivers and is a true gem among Irish waters. The river itself is about 8 kilometres long, and is divided into 9 beats with each beat limited to mostly 2 rods, sometimes 3.
The Erriff was once a famed sea trout fishery, but like many rivers in the west of Ireland, it suffered greatly when salmon farms started operating in the nearby bay, and runs collapsed in the early 1990s. In recent years, there has been a strong recovery, and in 2010 sea trout runs were very good. Sea trout start to enter the river in June, and run on most tides throughout the summer. All sea trout caught must be released alive.
TAWNYARD & DERRINTIN LOUGHS
Tawnyard Lough is 250 acres in size and is located up in the Mayo hills, a pictureque spot for a day of fishing. The lough holds a good stock of Salmon and Sea Trout. Fly-fishing and dapping are the only permitted methods of fishing here and boats and outboard motors are available to anglers. Derrintin Lough is a smaller lough and holds a good stock of Brown Trout. Fly-fishing is the only method permitted.
